Australian law comes from two primary sources that are judges and courts, and Australian state and federal parliaments.

Law made by judges and courts is often called judge-made law, common law, case law or precedent. For the purposes of this chapter, the phrase ‘common law’ will be used in discussing laws made through courts.

The body of law made by parliament is often called statute law, parliament-made law or more commonly legislation.
